Animation Terms

1. Squash and Stretch - Defining the rigidity & mass of an object
by distorting its shape during an action.

Squash and stretch is a common animation technique applied to characters or machinery in motion, giving it a cartoonish feel as opposed to realistic jerky motion. Squash and stretch keeps the volume of the character constant. This is often explained by analogy to a half-filled sack of flour.

2. Timing - Spacing actions to define the weight & size of objects
& the personality of characters.

Timing can affect the perception of mass of an object. A heavier object takes a greater force and a longer time to accelerate and decelerate. For example, if a character picks up a heavy object, e.g., a bowlng ball, they should do it much slower than picking up a light object such as a basketball. Similarly, timing affects the perception of object size. A larger object moves more slowly than a smaller object. These effects are done not by changing the poses, but by varying the spaces or time (number of frames) between poses.

3. Anticipation - The preparation for an action.

A well timed anticipation can enable the viewer to better understand a rapid action, e.g., preparing to run and then dashing off-screen.

Anticipation can also create the perception of weight or mass, e.g., a heavy person might put their arms on a chair before they rise, whereas a smaller person might just stand up.

4. Staging - Presenting an idea so that it is unmistakably clear.

Staging is the presentation of an idea so that it is clear. The key idea is that the idea is made clear to the viewer. An important objective of staging is to lead the viewers eye to where the action will happen so that they do not miss anything.

Group Work

I quite like the way Sin City and Pulp Fiction use two stories, with the first story wrapping around the second.

Example of Sin City, Josh Hartnett’s character killing a woman on a balcony, and the film finishes with Josh Hartnett (even though he hasn’t been seen since the first scene and his story has nothing to do with the main story) again, with him offering a cigarette to a girl, which implies he has been sent to murder her too.

We as a group would like to use this style.

The Date

Interlace *** with credits

***
Trevor is driving up to Ashley’s house (Infection by RX bandits on stereo). The first date is always nervy. This time he spared no expense,
all of the money he had earned that month was going on the date, but that was not much, a waiters job does
not really pay, especially for a 16 year old.
Walking along the garden path towards the door, all he could think about is how beautiful she was.
***
Turns off stereo

(Thought bubble above character with girls image)

He walked up the steps and knocked on the door. Took a deep breath and clutching the flowers he had brought her,
tightly in his hand. The door opens.

(Front view of Trevor, glow on face. Then cuts to a fat man standing in the door).

The boy smiles at the miserable fat man and his daughter squeezes in-between then both. The boy grins and gives
the girl the flowers. The girl looks unimpressed and walks down the path.
cut in to main story

Chris walks out of close turns on iPod with Forever Lost by God is an Astronaut, and walks in to subway. Fade to shot of crowd focused on a gorgeous girl (Lesley) coming up on the opposite escalator (on way up from subway) towards Chris. (song changes to Here we Go Again by OKGO) Cut to shot of intense lustful look as Chris and Lesley pass At the bottom of the escalator he finds Lesley’s Security pass for Metro Airport. Cut to Chris on subway, Lesley in thought bubble. cut to Chris at work on phone, "we need you here for a meeting plan". Chris books flight out of Metro airport because he remembers Lesley works there. Chris in metro Airport sees Lesley.. cut to Rangerover driving through glass wall, terrorist gets out with C4 strapped to him. He pushes button but nothing happens, he looks confused. Chris then punches him. cut to Chris and Lesley kissing.

The Dream - Random Ideas

Animatic in stylish black and white? Maybe with a splash of colour in some scenes.

Also, a narrative? may be needed to make the story clear.

The Martial Artist - Character Analysis

The Martial Artist

Name: Unknown

Age: 26

Profession: Martial Artist and shelf stacker at local supermarket.

Hometown: New York

Physical traits: well toned, bright blue eyes, 5”10

Personality: hardworking, outgoing, likes to take chances

Weaknesses/faults: sometimes let’s people take advantage, doesn’t organise his life, and spends money freely

Strengths/Virtues: hardworking, outgoing,

Illness: none

The martial artist plays a large part in the story; he is overworked and exhausted, trying to make some money to afford an operation for his mother. He has taken two jobs to scrape some money together. He has also taken an extreme way to make money, selling drugs, despite being anti drug himself. He argues this choice with himself every day, but convinces himself that it’s the only way to pay for the life saving operation his mother.

Again these drawings are in black and white, but now with a little splash of colour.

The Secret Agent - Character Analysis

The Secret Agent

Name: Unknown

Age: 48

Profession: Secret Agent

Hometown: New York

Physical traits: long chin, square jaw, long face, 16 stone, 6”4.

Personality: Withdrawn, secretive, shy and driven

Weaknesses/faults: ignorant, selfish, and withdrawn

Strengths/Virtues: driven, hardworking

Illness: Lung Cancer

The secret agent plays a large part in the story; he works very hard as a Secret Agent, but lately the standard of his work has dropped at an alarming rate due to his illness (which he has kept quiet, and has not told anyone). Because of the drop in the standard of his work, his supervisors are thinking of paying him off. But if the Secret Agent can crack one last case, he could keep his brilliant reputation that he has earned over the years intact. He would do anything to think he had done something worthwhile before he died. This shows in a tough choice he has to make at the end of the animation.

As I said before, drawings are in black and white.

The Dream - scenario.

The Dream

Main Characters - An overworked martial artist and a withdrawn secret agent.

Theme of Story - Epic Slice of Life

Major Event - a Dream

A martial artist and a secret agent are brought together by one dream.

When two overworked and exhausted men travel home from work, they happen to fall asleep on the journey home, leading to both of the men having a dream. During this dream they become emotionally connected, and after waking up they are very confused. Feeling they have known each other for years, yet at the same time they do not know what the other looks like, feeling each others worries and secrets, it builds some sort of sympathetic bridge between them. Until one day, by chance, the secret agent raids the martial artist’s house on suspicion of drugs; the pair meet, leading to an explosive finale.

Toon Boom v Flash

Flash

Pro's
Easier to use
more standard in it's approach
can make web applications and games

Con's
Made first and foremost for web applications
Dearer than Toon Boom

Toon Boom

Pro's
Made solely for animation
Cheaper than Flash
Easier to use camera movements (3d camera and multiplane)

Con's
Vector drawing is tough
hard to navigate

No pro studio uses just one animation software, it's abot being creative and using the advantages of both programmes.
